From the start, I knew that Seim Johnson would be different from other firms. At my university’s Meet the Firms event, Tony Eitzmann stopped me and engaged me in a conversation about my hometown and my interests. He was the one that introduced me to the culture of the firm and the internship opportunities available. I applied that night. I’m so glad that I spent time at the table at Meet the Firms because I was introduced to a firm that stressed a culture of excellence and balance – a perfect fit for me! As an intern, I was given the same responsibilities that associates also completed, which showed just how much confidence Seim Johnson had in my abilities. Overall, the experience was so beneficial because of how much experience I got with auditing and tax preparation.
Entering into the internship with absolutely no accounting work experience led me to believe that I would not be able to engage in much client work or be entrusted with “real-life” audit or tax opportunities. I was so wrong! Seim Johnson assigns every intern a few audits to participate in throughout the internship and allowed us to communicate with clients, work through sections on our own, and try our hand at whatever we showed interest in. During the tax internship, I was able to complete many tax returns from start to finish, even those of higher difficulty. Not only was the training extremely helpful to gain confidence in approaching the audits and tax work, but the employees of Seim Johnson were all extremely kind-hearted and helpful. I found the learning environment to be highly impactful. Instead of taking work from me when I got stuck, the reviewers would walk me through how to complete the task on my own, which skyrocketed my preparation abilities. The hands-on experience gained through the internship program was above and beyond what I could’ve hoped for as someone with no work experience yet!

The internship at Seim Johnson far exceeded my expectations. It was a tremendous learning experience for me and not only taught me accounting skills, but also how an office runs, how to interact with your co-workers, and great client management skills. Seim Johnson treats their interns as if they are first-year, full-time hires. The work that I did had real value. Other employees at the firm were always happy to help with questions, and also encouraged interns to challenge themselves. Seim Johnson is tremendously proud of the people that work here. It showed in my internship and has shown every day since I took my full-time position. The Seim Johnson team certainly makes the internship a little less intimidating for first-year interns.

Seim Johnson’s internship program far exceeded my expectations. I was drawn to the program after a friend had nothing but positive feedback about her experience. I loved the hands-on experience that this internship provided for me. It was so much different than the private accounting internship I had previously. I got to do real work during my internship that counted! The firm allows you to work in different departments and industries, which was an invaluable experience. I would recommend Seim Johnson to anyone looking for that “small town, big firm” feeling.
When people ask the question, “What do you like most about your job?” everyone always answers “the people.” While that is true here at Seim Johnson, I would say the feeling you get here (that starts with the people) is our biggest selling point. When you go into public accounting, you know you are signing on for some long nights and weekends, but if you’re doing it alongside people who truly care about you and make the environment fun, it doesn’t seem as bad. I know who I can go to when I need a laugh, I know whose office to go into if I need a beer, and I know who will go grab sushi with me. I have gone to a comedy show with a coworker (in another state), delivered a wedding cake (the most important job!) across the state for a coworker, gone to concerts with coworkers, and have explored Chicago with a coworker. All people I never would have met and experiences I would have never had without my Seim Johnson teammates.
